PHOENIX — Sky Harbor isn't just "America's Friendlist Airport," anymore. A new ranking from the Wall Street Journal named Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as the single best airport in the nation.
The airport also received an International Airport Review award for its disability initiatives to support people who are visual or hearing impaired.
WSJ's Best Large U.S. Airports 2023 list rated the 50 busiest airports in the country on reliability, value and convenience. Sky Harbor beat out Minneapolis (MSP) and Los Angeles (LAX) to secure the top spot.
"The airport received high marks thanks to our great weather, and for fewest flight cancellations," Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego said during a press conference at the airport on Thursday.
Sky Harbor managed to score highly during a uniquely busy year with both Super Bowl LVII and the World Series in the Valley.
"This year alone, we broke a passenger milestone the day after the Superbowl. More than 200,000 people came through the airport compared to 130,000 on an average day. We were the busiest airport in the nation that day. Today, off the heels of a whirlwind World Series we are already preparing for next year's NCAA Men's final four, which is sure to bring thousands more to Sky Harbor."
Sky Harbor recently welcomed Lynx Air and Flair Airlines, adding flights to Monterey, California, Toronto, Canada and Jacksonville, Florida. The airport plans to add nonstop flights to Pasco, Washington and Tijuana, Mexico.
