PHOENIX — Are you traveling this holiday season? You won't be alone — more than 2.2 million Arizonans are packing their bags and getting ready to travel during one of the busiest holiday seasons since 2019, AAA reports.
This year is one of the busiest holiday periods AAA has tracked in more than 20 years, with more than 115.2 million people expected to travel between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1. Among those packing their bags will be more than 2.2 million Arizonans, ready to travel this holiday season.
“The travel outline for the year-end holidays echoes what we’ve been seeing in travel throughout 2023," Brian Ng, Senior Vice President of Membership and Travel Marketing for AAA Arizona, said in a press release. “Despite high costs, more Americans are prioritizing creating memories with loved ones and exploring new destinations.”
To avoid the any holiday mishaps, AAA Arizona has five travel tips for smooth sailing (and flying and driving).
Check the forecast
Stay ahead of any weather disruptions by monitoring updates on your airline's app or website, and checking the forecast before you start your drive.
Prep before you're in the air
When it comes to flying, there are a lot of things to consider, from TSA and parking to checking your bags and obtaining your boarding pass. To skip the fuss, as much as you can ahead of time from the comfort of your home.
Travel during off-peak times
According to AAA, drivers can expect up to 20% longer travel times nationwide. Opting for off-peak times, before 2 p.m. or after 8 p.m., may help. The most congested travel days are predicted to be Dec. 23 and Dec.28.
Check your car before you hit the road
AAA recommends getting your car inspected prior to traveling. But hurry in: AAA expects over 900,000 travelers to seek roadside assistance nationwide over the holidays.
Use your resources to maximize fuel efficiency
There are great apps from Gas Buddy to the AAA app to help you track the lowest gas prices all along your route.
