A ground stop in the morning at Sky Harbor may mean trouble for connecting flights

The FAA issued a 'ground stop at origin' this morning.

PHOENIX — Planes are arriving and departing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport right now but a ground stop issued this morning may cause headaches later.

Flights coming into Sky Harbor Airport Friday morning were held at their point of origin until about 8:30 a.m., Friday, according to the FAA.

The practical effect of an origin ground stop means that flights leaving Phoenix later in the day may be delayed because the planes for those flights are late arriving here.

An example: Your 10:30 a.m. flight from Phoenix to San Francisco is on a plane that was scheduled to leave Houston for Phoenix at 7:45 a.m. The ground stop pushed that departure back an hour, which means the plane may be late.

The ground stop was due to weather and "fog" causing low visibility, Federal Aviation Administration officials said. The low visibility was from dust kicked up by wind and storms to the south and east of Phoenix.

The airport has not released a statement on the ground stop at this time. 12News has reached out to airport officials to learn more.
