"Witnesses said that the airplane had fueled up at H. A. Clark Memorial and took off, several moments later, they heard the plane operating at what they described as low or no power, turned to a northerly direction back towards the airport where the plane came down in a field nearby," the police department said.
First responders found two people inside the plane and a third outside of it, according to police.
The pilot has been identified as 31-year-old Hyemoon Kim, from South Korea. A second victim has been identified as 44-year-old Christopher Evans of La Mesa, California. The third victim has been identified as Dakota L Almazan, a 51-year-old resident of Las Vegas.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.
