TEMPE, Ariz — A person is dead after driving the wrong way on Interstate 10 and crashing into a commercial truck, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) said.
The driver was headed eastbound in the westbound lanes of traffic when they crashed into the truck, DPS said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident has closed the westbound lanes of both I-10 and US60 near Baseline Road, deputies said. This closure will affect rush hour traffic.
DPS said it is trying to get US60 open within the hour. There is no estimated time of reopening for I-10.
Deputies have yet to release the following information:
- Identity of the dead driver
- Condition of the driver that was crashed into
- Whether impairment played a role in the crash

- 2016: 952 deaths
- 2017: 1,000 deaths
- 2018: 1,010 deaths
- 2019: 982 deaths
- 2020: 1,057 deaths
