PHOENIX — An 8-year-old girl is dead following a crash on the US 60 in Tempe on Monday.
According to Arizona DPS, a crash involving eight vehicles occurred around 8 a.m. Monday between Rural and McClintock roads.
An SUV was changing lanes when the crash involving seven other vehicles occurred. A loaded commercial dump truck was involved in the crash. Several people were transported to the hospital with injuries. Four children sustained injuries and one of them did not survive, DPS said.
A second crash then took place around 8:22 a.m. on the U.S. 60 near milepost 173 in Tempe. This crash reportedly involved two vehicles, including a DPS vehicle.
During the first crash, a pickup truck pulling a utility trailer westbound on U.S. 60 struck the concrete barrier wall and crossed over into the eastbound HOV lane where the pickup truck rolled onto its driver's side.
Emergency vehicles blocked the overturned pickup truck and trailer eastbound on U.S. 60, officials said. During this time, an SUV going eastbound hit the back of a DPS patrol vehicle, DPS said. No one was onboard the patrol vehicle.
The SUV driver sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital. Officials said the driver of the SUV is suspected of driving impaired.
The investigation is ongoing.
