PHOENIX — Two people died after multiple crashes happened while troopers were investigating a DUI on I-17, authorities said.

Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers were investigating an alleged DUI driver at 1 a.m. on July 7 who stopped in a northbound lane on Interstate 17 of Northern Avenue in Phoenix.

While troopers were working to clear the vehicle from the road and investigate the DUI, two other uninvolved cars crashed in the backup. No injuries were reported from the second crash.

After the second crash, another uninvolved vehicle crashed into the cars in the second crash at high speed. The driver of one of the vehicles in the second crash died after being hit by the third vehicle, authorities say. He has been identified as Francisco Ruiz Coronado, 28, of Phoenix.

The driver of the third vehicle, a 17-year-old from Glendale, died at the hospital, officials said. His identity has not been released.

A passenger in the first vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the first vehicle is being evaluated for possible impairment.
