21-year-old killed after car falls into canyon near Tortilla Flat

DPS said that the Volkswagen rolled while making a turn on SR 88, traveling roughly 300 feet into the bottom of a canyon.

TORTILLA FLAT, Ariz. — A rollover crash on State Route 88 left one person dead after the car they were riding in slid roughly 300 feet into the bottom of a canyon, Department of Public Safety officials said.

The crash happened Saturday just after 10 p.m. at milepost 218.6 near Tortilla Flats. According to DPS, the Volkswagen Jetta involved in the crash was negotiating an eastbound curve when they drove onto the westbound shoulder and rolled, coming to rest in a canyon near the highway. 

The passenger in the vehicle was thrown from the car, and first responders pronounced them dead on the scene of the crash. 

The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Daniel Christopher Curcio-Kennedy of Gilbert, DPS said.
