MESA, Ariz. — A man is dead following a fatal crash in Mesa, the city's police department said.

Mesa police officers responded to reports of a serious crash at the intersection near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road around 10 p.m. Friday night. The 911 caller told police the crash involved a Mazda SUV and a motorcycle. The caller told police the motorcyclist appeared to be severely injured on the ground.

Officers found the motorcyclist, later identified as 23-year-old Alex Calderon, partially trapped under the car, police said. Emergency personnel extricated Calderon and he was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Calderon was the only rider on the motorcycle, police said.

Both the driver and the passenger in the Mazda sustained minor injuries and were quickly discharged from the hospital after treatment, police said.

Police said it appears the motorcycle was traveling west on Southern Avenue at a high speed, weaving between vehicles moving in the same direction. The Mazda appears to have been waiting at the light on Southern, preparing to turn right onto Sycamore Avenue, when the motorcycle hit it, police said.

The driver of the Mazda was tested for impairment and processed for DUI as is protocol for fatal accidents, but Mesa police said the results will not be available for a few weeks.

Mesa police did not provide any additional information.
