PHOENIX — Alberta Lavetta Cons had a bright future ahead of her, but her life was cut short when she was killed while on her way to work.
She was standing on a sidewalk when a driver hit her with his truck. The crash is still under investigation.
“She had a glow on her,” the victim’s mother Alberta King said. “She found the job she loved, she found the man she loved, had her two kids. Life was great.”
On August 10, the 30-year-old and mother of two was involved in a fender bender near 51st Avenue and Encanto Boulevard, Lavetta’s fiancé Jorge Lucero said.
“I was on the phone with her when everything happened,” he said. “I heard her make this noise, like a shock. But loud and long. Then I heard a screeching sound, then a hit.”
Lucero said he called out Cons' name several times, but she didn’t answer.
Cons had initially FaceTimed him and asked to help translate so she could communicate with the other driver, but because of bad service, she called him instead. A few seconds into that call, she was killed.
Phoenix police said Cons was struck by a pickup truck while she stood on the sidewalk near the vehicle she was driving. Lucero said the car belonged to him.
The accident happened after the driver of the truck was heading south on 51st Avenue, but traffic was slowing down, and a backup was building for a “disabled” vehicle in the curb lane, detectives said.
Police said the driver swerved to the left and hit another truck going the opposite direction. The driver then swerved right and collided with Cons, killing her, the department said.
Officers said the driver showed no signs of impairment. He is not facing any charges at this time.

The family has questions about how the accident happened.
“My car was not disabled,” Lucero said. “The keys were on it and cops even drove it to me after they were done. I told them she was involved in a fender bender, but they didn’t listen to me.”
Cons fiancé is asking the driver who was involved in the fender bender before she was killed to come forward, in hopes they can shed light on the crash.
“I’m hoping she went with God real quick and didn’t suffer,” King said. “This was not expected, I mean. We were preparing for a wedding.”
Lucero and Cons had plans to get married in two months.
“She was an amazing woman, she made me a better man. I love her and miss her,” Lucero said.
Cons leaves behind a 1-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl. The family has set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
