MESA, Ariz. — A suspected impaired driver hit a Mesa Police officer's vehicle, the city's police department said.

Mesa police at the scene told a 12News photojournalist that the officer's vehicle was hit in the bumper by a suspected impaired driver near Dobson Road and University Drive.

The crash occurred just after 1:30 a.m. on Monday. Police said the Mesa police patrol car was traveling west on University Drive when a car approached the patrol vehicle at high speed, attempting to pass the patrol car by using the left-hand turn lane.

The other car then hit the back of the patrol vehicle and allegedly lost control, skidding sideways. The car then hit a City of Mesa light pole, knocking it over and damaging it.

The car continued sliding over the curb and into a large pile of decorative boulders, police said.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital for evaluation and the officer was not hurt.
