MESA, Ariz. — An officer was injured in a crash on the Loop 202 Red Mountain freeway in east Mesa on Saturday night, according to Mesa police.
The department told 12News the crash happened after the officer had finished a traffic stop on a separate vehicle and was on the shoulder of the road with his overhead lights still on.
A woman hit the police cruiser from behind. That woman was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The officer was also taken to the hospital and is being evaluated for a concussion.
Investigators are at the scene of the crash working to find out how this crash happened. Police said the driver will be checked for impairment.
According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, the investigation is blocking the right lane and on-ramp at McDowell Road. Drivers in the area should use caution.
