The crash happened on Interstate 10 near 7th Avenue Sunday morning, authorities said.

PHOENIX — Two people are dead and three others are in the hospital after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 10 near 7th Avenue Sunday morning, authorities said.

Just before the crash, at 3:22 a.m. reports of a wrong-way driver driving west in the eastbound lanes of I-10 began coming into dispatch, according to DPS.

DPS said minutes later at 3:24 a.m., a Toyota 86 passenger car driving the wrong way hit a Ford Escape head-on around 19th Avenue, with both vehicles bursting into flames.

First responders with the Phoenix Fire Department found the two vehicles involved in the crash on fire, and quickly extinguished the fire.

Three people from a third vehicle involved in the crash were hospitalized. One 57-year-old woman and two 32-year-old women were taken to the hospital in serious condition, according to DPS.

The names of those involved have not been released
