Traffic backed up for miles on I-17 because of crash near Black Canyon City

The backup was caused by a crash that closed a lane. Here's how officials say you can get around the traffic jam.

BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. — A 20-mile-long backup is causing major delays for drivers on southbound Interstate 17 north of Black Canyon City and the Arizona Department of Transportation is giving drivers help getting around it.

ADOT said the backup was originally because of a crash that was blocking the left lane at milepost 246, which is just north of Black Canyon City. That crash was cleared by 3:15 p.m., but a disabled vehicle at milepost 247 has now continued the traffic problems in the area.

If drivers want to get around the backup, they should get off I-17 at State Route 260 near Camp Verde and then take SR 260 eastbound to SR 87, also known as the Beeline Highway, and then take SR 87 southbound into the Valley.

ADOT also said drivers can take SR 169 east to SR 69, then take SR 69 east to SR 89, then take SR 89 south to US 60 and then take US 60 south into the Valley.

If drivers prefer to stay on I-17, they should expect delays.

Drivers can check real-time road conditions online at AZ511.gov, in the AZ511 app or by calling 511.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
