DPS: Motorcyclist dead after 'racing' incident on I-17

The fatal crash happened Sunday night at milepost 204 (Camelback Road). Here are the latest details.

PHOENIX β€” A motorcyclist is dead after a crash on Interstate 17 in Phoenix on Sunday night, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety

DPS told 12News that troopers responded to a "serious injury" crash on southbound I-17 at milepost 204, which is at the Camelback Road exit.

A 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle ridden by 22-year-old Rylee Garcia was allegedly "racing" a red Dodge Charger and a dark-colored Chevrolet, according to DPS. The motorcycle's driver lost control and hit the concrete median wall.

Garcia fell off the motorcycle and was hit by the Dodge Charger. Garcia died and the driver of the Dodge Charger did not stay at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

The incident closed the freeway's southbound lanes, but the lanes were reopened early Monday morning.

Drivers can find real-time road conditions at AZ511.gov, in the AZ511 app or by calling 511.

This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
