I-10 eastbound reopens near Gila River Bridge after emergency repairs overnight

Parts of the concrete had worn down to the rebar and needed extensive repair, officials said.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Heads up for drivers in the southeast parts of the Valley, the Gila River Bridge on Interstate 10 south of Chandler is steadily reopening after emergency repairs.

Part of the concrete deck on the eastbound lanes of the bridge had been worn down to the underlying rebar.

I-10 eastbound was closed at Riggs Road Tuesday morning while the damage was inspected. Both eastbound lanes closed overnight from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Delays are expected to continue into Wednesday. Only one eastbound lane is reopening to give the concrete time to cure.

The issue is unrelated to the construction project to replace the bridge, officials said.

“We believe it was just the wear and tear of the bridge," ADOT spokesperson Marcy McMaken said.

ADOT says the bridge was determined to be in good condition during its last inspection in February 2023.

Both the west and eastbound bridges over the Gila River are scheduled to be replaced in 2026 as part of the I-10 Wild Horse Pass Corridor Project.

Be aware that the speed limit on the highway has been reduced to 35 miles per hour in the area. Motorists can expect delays.
