I-10 reconstruction project hits the halfway point

The Arizona Department of Transportation expects the freeway reconstruction project to be completed by late 2024.

PHOENIX — The state's largest freeway reconstruction project is moving along just as expected, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

The Interstate 10 (I-10) Broadway Curve Improvement Project is now in the third of four construction phases.

The project is 11 miles long between Baseline Road and 40th Street.

“This stretch of Interstate 10 is the busiest stretch of I-10 in the state," ADOT Spokesperson Marcy McMacken said. “On average during a weekday, we see about 300,000 vehicles pass through the Broadway Curve area. By 2040, that number is expected to increase by 25 percent.”

The project will expand the freeway by adding more lanes and collector-distributor roads.

“The collector-distributor roads or CD roads are roads that are one parallel to Interstate 10, roughly between Baseline and 40th Street in both directions, and the purpose of the CD roads is to separate the local traffic from the main traffic that’s just passing through the Broadway Curve area," McMacken said.

The expansion is expected to increase freeway capacity by 60 percent.

“The main goal of the project is to reduce traffic congestion but also reduce travel time through the Broadway Curve area," McMacken said.

In the third phase, crews will complete most of the construction, including the new I-10/SR 143 interchange.

“We will have some occasional minor overnight restrictions in the area, but our next full freeway closure isn’t scheduled until early January and that closure will consist of the SR 143 being closed," McMacken said.

ADOT is asking drivers to respect the rules of the road so the project can wrap up on time in late 2024.

“We would like motorists to remember to slow down, drive the speed limit, pay attention, so that everyone gets to where they need to be safely and so that motorists and construction crews remain safe," McMacken said.

Road closures and restrictions can be found on the project's website.
