I-10 Broadway curve drivers: New 48th Street lanes to open for SR-143 access

New northbound lanes of 48th Street to access northbound SR-143 will open on Monday, Jan. 8.

PHOENIX — The Arizona Dept. of Transportation will shift travel lanes near the I-10 Broadway curve improvement project, letting drivers use the new northbound lanes of 48th Street to access northbound SR-143. 

The image below shows the new traffic configuration ADOT will implement starting Monday, Jan. 8. 

The blue line shows the northbound 48th Street drivers currently use to access the northbound SR-143. The green line shows the new traffic shift drivers will use beginning Jan. 8. The red line is the existing northbound lanes that will permanetely close and eventually be removed by ADOT.

The Arizona Dept. of Transportation will allow drivers to use the new northbound lanes of 48th St. to access northbound SR-143 starting Monday, Jan. 8

To implement this traffic shift, ADOT will close the southbound lanes of SR-143 between the Loop 202 (Red Mtn freeway) to I-10 from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5 to 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8. At the same time, the following ramps will be closed: 

  • The ramps from Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound SR 143. 
  • The westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) off-ramp at Sky Harbor Boulevard.
  • The southbound SR 143 on-ramps at Washington Street, Sky Harbor Boulevard and University Drive.

According to ADOT, these are the recommended detours:

Southbound SR 143 detour for westbound Loop 202 drivers: Use westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to eastbound I-10 to access destinations south of the closure. To access University Drive, use eastbound I-10 to northbound 40th Street. 

Southbound SR 143 detour for eastbound Loop 202 drivers: Use eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) to westbound US 60 to access destinations south of the closure. To access University Drive, use eastbound Loop 202 to southbound Priest Drive. 

In addition to this closure, northbound 48th Street/SR 143 will be closed between Broadway Road and University Drive and the westbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143 will be closed. 

  • Northbound 48th Street detour: Use Broadway Road to northbound 40th Street or Priest Drive to access University Drive. 
  • Westbound I-10 ramp to northbound SR 143 detour: Use westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway). East Valley airport and Washington Street access: From Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway), use southbound 44th Street.
