PHOENIX — Five people are hospitalized and one woman has died after a head-on crash in north Phoenix Friday night, officials said.
The Phoenix Fire Department was called to the crash, near North 56th Street and East Pinnacle Peak Road, just before 9 p.m. and found two cars on fire. The fire was extinguished and six people were treated at the scene before all were taken to local trauma hospitals in critical condition.
One woman, later identified as 53-year-old Juliene Aumani, died soon after arriving at the hospital, Phoenix police said.
Investigators believe that a Fiat driven by a 19-year-old Madison Carey left the roadway before veering back across the centerline and striking the Toyota Corolla that Aumani and four other victims were in head-on.
Detectives are investigating whether or not impairment was a factor in the crash.
Police said Carey has been released from the hospital and subsequently booked for a charge of manslaughter.
