TEMPE, Ariz. — Police are investigating a fatal crash that happened early Thursday morning on Loop 202 near McClintock Drive.
The crash involved an SUV and a dump truck operated by an Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) subcontractor involved in a construction project on the roadway, the department said.
The driver of the dump truck has been detained under suspicion of being impaired, authorities told 12News at the scene. A 34-year-old Texas resident died in the crash.
The dump truck was traveling at about 15 mph when it struck the SUV, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The crash closed the eastbound lanes of the roadway from around 3 a.m. through 8:40 a.m., ADOT said. The lanes have since reopened.
