PHOENIX — A DPS trooper was involved in a motorcycle crash Tuesday evening that shut down several lanes on I-10 westbound near 43rd Avenue, an official with the Arizona DPS confirmed to 12News.
The trooper's injuries were described as “very serious injuries but they are not considered life-threatening,” according to Sgt. Eric Andrews with DPS.
The crash happened at 5:30 p.m. and involved the trooper and another sedan, Andrews said.
The crash happened when the trooper tried to transition to another lane. Traffic in front of the trooper "significantly slowed" and the trooper crashed, causing to him to be thrown from his motorcycle.
The person in the sedan was not injured.
The motorcycle could be seen on Sky12 laying on its side in the road. Only one lane is open and traffic is backed up significantly in the area. DPS said the lanes will be closed for several hours.
The trooper did not lose consciousness and was able to call the crash in himself, Andrews said.
The crash is being investigated as a critical incident, according to Andrews.
