BLACK CANYON CITY, Ariz. — A truck driver is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs and crashing his vehicle Thursday night on Interstate 17, officials said.
The tractor-trailer turned over near milepost 246, blocking off the freeway's southbound lanes.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the driver was presumed dead but his body could not be found by troopers who responded to the scene.
Troopers and police dogs searched through the wreckage and surrounding areas but there was no sign of the driver. DPS had to transport equipment from Phoenix to remove the damaged trailer from the freeway.
The driver was eventually located after he allegedly knocked on the door of a Black Canyon City residence, DPS said.
He was taken to the hospital and is facing criminal charges that include driving while impaired and leaving the site of a collision. The driver's identity has not been disclosed.
