1 man dead, another seriously hurt after crash in Phoenix

The collision happened near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road in north Phoenix. Here are the latest details.

PHOENIX — One man has died and another is fighting for his life in a Valley hospital after a serious accident in Phoenix, authorities say.

Phoenix police said the crash happened near the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. That intersection is east of Interstate 17 and the Happy Valley Towne Center.

Police said the two men driving cars that collided both had serious injuries. One of them, 23-year-old Leo Adolphus Kelly, died at the scene of the crash.

The other driver, who was extracted from his car, was taken to a nearby trauma hospital in critical condition, according to the Phoenix Fire Department

Phoenix fire added that another person in a third car was evaluated for injuries, but refused to be taken to the hospital to be checked out.

A Phoenix City Bus was also hit by the two vehicles involved in the crash, but the bus was just parked nearby and no one was onboard, Phoenix police said.
