A deadly crash on Loop 202 in Tempe ended with one person dead and four others in the hospital early Monday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. on the Arizona State Route 202 Red Mountain Freeway between Center Parkway and Priest Drive, Department of Public Safety officials said.

The incident occurred when a Dodge Avenger struck the concrete median wall and stopped in the HOV lane. That vehicle was then hit by a White Ford Escape, according to DPS reports.
