Two trucks that collided in a wrong-way crash on State Route 87 near Fountain Hills, Arizona, on May 26, 2024, are pictured.

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. — Three people are dead following a wrong-way crash in Fountain Hills early Sunday morning, authorities said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on State Route 87 near Shea Boulevard at 4:15 a.m. when a vehicle traveling south crossed over into the northbound lanes and collided with another car.

AZDPS said the crash killed three people, all of whom were passengers in the cars. The two drivers were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. None of the victims have been identified as AZDPS is still working to notify next of kin.

The northbound lanes of SR 87 were closed near Shea Boulevard for the investigation but reopened just before 2 p.m.

AZDPS said impairment has not been ruled out as a factor in this crash and are urging anyone who will be drinking on Memorial Day weekend to have a designated driver.

"We want you, the driver, we want everyone to get home safely to your loved ones," AZDPS public information manager Warren Trent said. "We want everyone to enjoy their Memorial Day weekend, but we also want people to get home safely."
