PHOENIX — One person has died after a crash on Interstate 10 that happened when state troopers were arresting a man who had fled across the freeway, authorities said.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety told 12News that they were called to the area of I-10 and Warner Road due to a man being in the westbound lanes of the freeway.

When troopers arrived and tried to take the man into custody, he ran across the westbound lanes, jumped over the median and started running into the eastbound lanes.

He then was hit by a car. Troopers then got into a "scuffle" with the man while trying to take the man into custody.

While that was happening, two cars collided. That crash killed passenger, Peter Stump, 40, of Chandler, and caused injuries to both of the drivers involved.

The pedestrian is a 34-year-old man from Glendale. He was not booked into jail because of his injuries.

Investigators say he will face charges.
