Car slams into semi-truck in 'violent' crash in Tolleson, police say

Police said the car failed to stop at a red light and slammed into the semi-truck. The car then caught on fire.

A fatal crash involving a car and a semi-truck closed the intersection of 83rd Avenue and Buckeye Road in Tolleson late Friday, the city's police department said.

The crash was "so violent it caused the passenger vehicle to burst into flames," police said.

Crews responded to the crash around 8:53 p.m. Investigators said the semi-truck and trailer was traveling westbound on Buckeye Road and stopped at a red light at 83rd Avenue. A passenger vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed failed to stop for the red light and ran into the trailer of the semi-truck still stopped at the red light.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, 19-year-old Gwendolyn Brooke Garcia of Avondale, was killed in the incident. Police said that Garcia was the only person in the car. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
