MESA, Ariz. — A man has died and a woman is in the hospital fighting for her life after a car they were in crashed into a palm tree, according to the Mesa Police Department.
Police said the crash happened on Saturday afternoon on Superstition Springs Boulevard, just south of Baseline Road.
Witnesses told officers the car the man and woman were in was headed east on Superstition Springs Boulevard and swerving from left to right.
The car swerved two or three times before it took a hard left turn, crossed three lanes of oncoming traffic and crashed head-on into the palm tree.
The man, who was the passenger of the car, took the brunt of the impact, according to police, and died at the scene.
The woman, who was driving the car, had to be extricated and has been taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries.
Investigators are still at the scene of the crash working to find out what caused the car to swerve and crash.
No other details were released and no one involved in the crash has been identified.
This is a developing story and more details will be added as they are made available.
