PHOENIX — Two people are in the hospital after their car caught fire in a crash with a fuel tanker in west Phoenix, city police said.
The crash happened around 2:15 a.m. when the passenger car ran a red light near 51st Avenue and Interstate 10. The car struck a fuel tanker turning at the intersection and "immediately burst into flames," a Phoenix police spokesman said.
Both people in the car were able to get out but were seriously injured in the process. First responders took them to a nearby hospital, and officials said that their injuries weren't life-threatening.
The driver of the vehicle is facing a possible DUI charge, and impairment is believed to have been a factor in the crash, officials said.
The driver of the fuel tank wasn't hurt and the area is expected to be closed for some time for investigation and cleaning.
