PHOENIX — A section of Interstate 17 running through the Valley will soon have its speed limit raised to 65 mph.
The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Tuesday it will soon be taking down the 55-mph speed signs located along the freeway between Peoria Avenue and the I-10 interchange.

After studying this section of I-17, ADOT determined that 65 mph was a more appropriate speed limit since most drivers are already driving at that speed.
A new state law requires all interstate highways in counties with more than three million people to have a minimum speed limit of 65 mph. The law does permit some exceptions for setting a lower speed limit.
According to a survey conducted by ADOT, about 75% of the 11,000 respondents agreed with setting the speed limit at 65 mph.
The new speed limit takes effect once the old speed signs have been replaced.
