2-month-old baby killed, 4 others injured in East Valley crash

The crash happened when a Honda Civic rear-ended a Subaru Forester that was stopped at a red light on Power Road. Here are the latest details.

MESA, Ariz. — A 2-month-old baby boy has died and several other people were injured in a crash in Mesa on Sunday, according to authorities.

The Mesa Police Department said five people were involved in the two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Power and Baseline roads.

The crash happened when a Honda Civic rear-ended a Subaru Forester, which was stopped at a red light on Power Road at about 1 p.m. on Sunday. The crash hurled the Forester into the intersection and caused it to roll over, police said.

All of the people in the Subaru, including two children, were injured. The driver and front passenger suffered minor injuries. A child in the backseat on the driver’s side has a broken bone. A 2-month-old boy in the back seat on the passenger’s side of the vehicle died at Banner Children’s Hospital, according to police.

The baby boy was in a car seat, which was installed properly, according to police.

Police said the driver of the Civic suffered broken bones in the crash.

The Civic also hit an Audi that was stopped at the red light, police said.

This crash remains under investigation. Speed is believed to be a contributing factor, but impairment is not, police said.
