PHOENIX — Two people are dead and three people are injured after a four-vehicle crash occurred in Phoenix on Tuesday night.
The Phoenix Police Department said 24-year-old Kimberly Sorg and 49-year-old Michelle Kardis are dead after the crash near 32nd and Cortez streets occurred around 8:30 p.m.
Sorg and Kardis were driving in a 2017 Nissan Maxima. The driver of the car, an unidentified 25-year-old man, was seriously injured.
The 23-year-old male driver of a 2007 Toyota Camry and the 53-year-old female driver of a 2017 Chevrolet Cruz both suffered minor injuries. Neither of them have been identified as of Wednesday morning.
The incident happened when the 23-year-old man crashed with the 25-year-old man driving the Nissan Maxima. Both cars were driving northbound on 32nd Street at the time.
The Nissan Maxima then went off the roadway and struck a block wall, police said. The Toyota Camry continued into southbound traffic and crashed with the Chevrolet Cruz and another vehicle that fled the scene.
The driver of the Toyota Camry allegedly showed signs and symptoms of impairment. The drivers of the Nissan Maxima and the Chevrolet Cruz did not show signs of impairment.
The driver of the Nissan Maxima, Sorg and Kardis were all taken to a local hospital for treatment, where Sorg and Kardis were pronounced dead.
The car that fled the scene was described as a light-colored passenger car.
Speed and impairment are believed to be factors in the crash.
