12-year-old dies in hospital after south Phoenix crash

The 14-year-old driver allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign and crashed with a car driving along Central Avenue.

PHOENIX — A 14-year-old boy was behind the wheel when he allegedly caused a car crash in south Phoenix that killed one boy and injured multiple others in the vehicle.

A 12-year-old boy has died after sustaining extremely critical injuries.

The Phoenix Police Department said the teenager was driving along Watkins Street when he failed to stop for a stop sign and crashed with a car driving along Central Avenue.

The boy was driving with at least five other boys between the ages of 9 and 15.

Four of the boys were sitting in the backseat without seatbelts.

At least two of the boys were ejected from the car at the time of the crash.

A 9-year-old boy suffered serious injuries.

Two of the other boys were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the other car was not seriously injured. Impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor to this crash, police said.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
