PHOENIX — One person has been taken into custody after a crash in west Phoenix on Saturday seriously injured one man and sent another adult and two children to the hospital, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Police said officers were called to the intersection of 35th and Southern avenues due to a crash involving two vehicles around 5:42 p.m. on Saturday. When officers got to the scene, they found a man ejected from one of the vehicles and suffering serious injuries.
The man was later identified as 44-year-old Henry Mandley and was rushed to the hospital, but was later pronounced dead on Sunday morning.
The vehicle Mandley was in was driven by a woman and had two children inside. All three were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Police did not say whether or not the driver and passengers are related to Mandley.
Officers took the driver of one of the cars, later identified as 22-year-old Fernando Rodriguez-Sanchez, into custody.
According to police, Rodriguez-Sanchez was driving east on Southern Avenue and began to pass stopped traffic by driving in a bike lane. He then allegedly drover through the red light at 35th Avenue and Southern Avenue when he hit the other vehicle driving south on 35th Avenue.
Rodriguez-Sanchez and a passenger left the scene but were shortly detained by responding officers nearby. Police said they identified Rodriguez-Sanchez as the driver and noticed impairment.
Rodriguez-Sanchez was processed for DUI and booked into jail. He is facing charges of aggravated assault, endangerment, failure to stay at a fatal collision scene and felony DUI charges, police said.
