Two people are dead after the multi-vehicle crash, Arizona Department of Public Safety officials said.
DPS said the crash happened around 12:10 p.m. when traffic slowed in the westbound lane. A box truck wasn't able to slow down in time and hit a pickup and three other vehicles.
"The force of the impact pushed both the box truck and the pickup into the median where both vehicles caught fire," DPS said.
The driver of the box truck was identified as 53-year-old José Guillermo Castellanos González. The driver of the pickup truck was identified as 62-year-old Efrain Gutiérrez-Ávila. Both men were Phoenix residents.
The drivers of both the box truck and the pickup truck were killed in the crash, DPS said. The drivers of two other vehicles were hospitalized.
DPS said the box truck was rear-ended but that driver was not injured in the crash.
An ADOT camera showed a plume of smoke billowing into the sky near the crash site.
This is a developing story: additional details will be released as they become available.
