PHOENIX — One person is dead and two more people are hospitalized after a three-vehicle crash in central Phoenix, the city's police department said.
The Phoenix Police Department said officers were called to the intersection of 19th Avenue and Bethany Home Road at about 9:15 p.m. regarding a multiple-vehicle crash that resulted in serious injuries.
When officers and firefighters arrived, they found three people who had been hurt. The Phoenix Fire Department told 12News that two of the victims had to be extricated from a car after the crash.
A man, who was the driver of one of the vehicles, and a woman, the driver of another vehicle, both had serious injuries and were taken to the hospital. The woman remains in critical condition and the man was pronounced dead, police said.
Another adult from the crash was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has been released from the hospital.
Police said one vehicle was traveling west on Bethany Home Road and crashed into another vehicle turning onto Bethany Home Road from 19th Avenue. Both vehicles involved in the first crash were in oncoming traffic, causing a second crash with a third vehicle traveling east on Bethany Home Road.
The man who died is the driver of the third vehicle involved in the second crash, police said. He's been identified as 52-year-old Amer Ibrahim.
Impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said.
This crash happened four miles north and 45 minutes after a five-vehicle crash where a driver has been detained and is being investigated for DUI. These crashes are not related.
This is a developing story. More details will be added as they are made available.
