Maricopa County getting $15M to install new EV charging stations

The Maricopa County Air Quality Department will receive funding to install new charging stations.

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — Maricopa County is expected to receive $15 million to install new electric vehicle charging stations in areas that are publicly accessible.

Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Mark Kelly announced Thursday that the Maricopa County Air Quality Department was receiving funds from the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program.

“These clean energy investments show that we can make real progress in improving air quality while ensuring our communities have the infrastructure they need,” Kelly said in a statement.

The funding will be earmarked for providing new charging stations at facilities participating in the Maricopa County Travel Reduction Program, which started in 1989 as an effort to reduce air pollution in the Valley.

The Phoenix Metro area has previously been assessed as having some of the worst air quality in the country.

In 2022, Arizona was awarded $76 million to construct charging stations along the state's freeways.
