PHOENIX — An injury has delayed Brittney Griner from being able to play in the Phoenix Mercury's upcoming season.
The Mercury said Griner has a fractured toe on her left foot.
It is unknown when Griner will be able to return to playing.
"Griner will be out and re-evaluated in the coming weeks," the team said.
The Mercury's regular season starts on May 14 in Las Vegas against the Aces.
Griner has been selected to be a part of the women's basketball team representing the United States in the upcoming Paris Olympics.
It is unknown how the injury will affect her appearance with the team.
Griner recently released a book that discussed her experience in a Russian prison.
Griner was detained at a Moscow airport in February 2022. Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis.
She was in prison for 10 months before being released.
