Why men's and women's beach volleyball have such different uniforms

Why aren't they are wearing something more similar?

The difference between beach volleyball uniforms for men and women is obvious to even the most casual viewer. Men are in tank tops and shorts while most of the women are in bikinis.

Why aren't they are wearing something more similar? USA Volleyball says women want to wear two piece swimsuits, reports ForTheWin.

Beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh Jennings explained part of their preference has to do with conditions.

"When it comes to beach volleyball, we're playing in 100-degree-plus weather," she told The Huffington Post.

According to the FIVB regulations, women in the sport actually don't have to wear a bikini and they have many more uniform options than men do.

Just look at the women from Egypt who played in Rio -- they wore pants and long-sleeved shirts.

It's because of a change to the uniform guidelines in 2012 that's even possible. A change, which according to ForTheWin, was to implemented to make the rules -- and sport -- more culturally inclusive.

The one guideline both genders must follow: every athlete must wear a top and bottom.
