PHOENIX — The Olympics are underway in Paris and spectators all across the globe cannot get enough. Already dreaming of the next Olympic Games? We've got you covered.
Here's the rundown on the next time you can cheer on Team USA at the Olympics.
How often are the Olympics held?
Each of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games are held every four years to "respect the ancient origins" of the Games, according to the Olympics website. The four-year interval between the Ancient Games was named an "Olympiad," and was used to count time, as opposed to using years.
The Summer and Winter Games were first changed from happening in the same year to happening in different years in 1992, though the change was first introduced in 1986. From 1924 to 1992, the Summer and Winter Games were held in the same year. Now, the Summer Games are held in the first year of the Olympiad and the Winter Games are held in the third year.
What Olympic Games will be held next?
The Winter Olympics are set to be held in 2026 and will include sports such as skiing, ice hockey, luging and other sports.
Where will the next Olympic Games be held?
The Winter Olympics will be held from Feb. 6 through 22, 2026 in Milan, Italy and the Paralympic Winter Games will be held from March 6 through 15, 2024, also in Milan.
How is the host city chosen for the Games?
Cities and regions interested in hosting the Olympic Games reach out to their National Olympic Committee to request official support. From there, the NOC makes contact with the International Olympic Committee, and the three entities work together with the Future Host Commission and the IOC Executive Board to make a decision.
