Here's how Arizona athletes did on the first day of Olympic competitions

The first medals of the 2024 Olympics in Paris will be awarded on Saturday and some athletes from Arizona have a shot at gold!

PARIS, France — The games of the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris are now underway!

The Olympics officially kicked off with an opening ceremony unlike any before. As athletes paraded down the Seine River, artists such as Celine Dion and Lady Gaga performed to the delight of more than 300,000 people in attendance and millions watching worldwide.

That set the stage for the first Olympics in the City of Light since 1924.

Day 1 of the Olympics was on Saturday, but competition has been underway in a few sports since Wednesday. Men's soccer and rugby sevens kicked off their tournaments on July 24 while women's soccer, women's handball and men's and women's individual archery began their tournaments on July 25.

All events paused on Friday for the opening ceremony. The competition resumed Saturday with the first medals handed out in road cycling, diving, fencing, judo, rugby sevens, shooting, and swimming.

Jagger Eaton, Men's Street Skateboarding (postponed until July 29)

Mesa's Jagger Eaton will be looking to win his second Olympic medal when he competes in men's street skateboarding outside of the Place de la Concorde.

Rain that fell throughout the opening ceremony continued on Saturday, leading to postponements and delays at the Paris Olympics.

The first event of the skateboarding competition, men’s street skateboarding, was postponed from Saturday until Monday because of the showers. The women’s event is scheduled for Sunday.

Skateboarding is held at the outdoor venue of La Concorde Urban Park in Paris. World Skate, the sport’s governing body, cited adverse weather conditions for the move.

Rain has been one of the big stories early in the Games after constant showers and occasional downpours served as the backdrop for the opening ceremony. As of 10 a.m. CEST (4 a.m. ET), much of the rain had cleared from the area.

Bente and Lieke Rogge, Women's Water Polo

The other two Sun Devils competing in women's water polo in Paris are the Rogge sisters, Bente and Lieke, who play for the Netherlands.

The sisters helped the Dutch beat Hungary, 10-8, in the preliminary round.

Bente Rogge gave the Netherlands its final goal as time expired, throwing it in from deep after Hungary pulled their keeper.

Bente Rogge led the Netherlands with three goals.

Other notes for July 27

The highlight of day one of the competition in Paris is expected to be the first day of swimming, which will see medals handed out in the women's 100-meter butterfly and 400-meter freestyle, the men's 100-meter breaststroke and 400-meter freestyle and the men's and women's 4x100-meter freestyle relays.

Currently, no Arizona Olympians are scheduled to swim, but the relay teams have not been announced and could feature some swimmers from Arizona, including Canada's Taylor Ruck, who grew up in Scottsdale and attended Chaparral High School before going on to swim at Stanford. Ruck swam on Canada's 4x100-meter freestyle relays in both the 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
