American Michael Phelps shared the silver in the 100-meter butterfly, making more history at the Rio Olympics. He tied with Chad le Clos.
Joseph Schooling of Singapore pulled off the upset and won gold.
Phelps is now up to 22 gold medals, and 27 Olympic medals overall. The only event left for Phelps to swim here is Saturday night’s medley relay.
Though the 31-year-old Phelps is certainly in world-class shape, he has said he is going to retire after these Games. His longtime coach, Bob Bowman, thinks Phelps will stick to retirement this time around — and not return to compete in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
“I just don’t see it happening,” Bowman said Thursday night. “He’s in such a good place personally. He doesn’t need it.”
