Paris Olympics: AZ athletes to watch on Aug. 7

Here's a look at athletes with Arizona ties looking to win big in Paris on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

PARIS, France — Another day of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris with another chance for an Arizona Olympian to bring home a medal. 

Here's a look at athletes with Arizona ties hoping to win big in Paris on Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Dominique Parrish - Women's Wrestling

On Aug. 7, Dominique Parrish will compete in the final of the Women's Freestyle 53 Kg in wrestling. She is up against Japan’s Akari Fujinami.

Parrish works at Sunkist Kid's Wrestling in Tempe.

She has a gold medal in the wrestling event for the 2022 World Championships and the 2022 Pan American Championships.

Team USA Women's Basketball

Phoenix Mercury players Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi will be back in action on the Paris court again on Aug. 7.

Team USA will play Nigeria in the quarterfinals in women's basketball at 12:30 p.m.

The winning team will advance to the semifinals on Aug. 9.

Freddie Crittenden - Track and Field

Phoenix Track Club's Freddie Crittenden is back in action on Aug. 7.

Crittenden will be running in the semifinals for the Men's 100-meter Hurdles.

On Sunday Crittenden jogged through the event with a minor injury in order to save his body for later in the week.

Abdihamid Nur - Track and Field

Northern Arizona University's Abdihamid Nur will be running for Team USA on Aug. 7.

The Somali-born long-distance runner attended NAU from 2019-2022. While there he earned several NCAA medals during competition.

Nur is running in heat 2 of the Men's 5,000-meter.

Bryce Hoppel - Track and Field

Bryce Hoppel of Flagstaff will be racing on Aug. 7.

Hoppel specializes in long-distance running and will compete in round 1 of the Men's 800-meter run.

While competing in the World Indoor Championships, Hoppel earned a bronze in 2022 bronze and a gold in 2024.

Arizona sports 

The city of Phoenix is home to four major professional sports league teams; The NFL's Arizona Cardinals, NBA's Phoenix Suns, WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury and MLB's Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Cardinals have made State Farm Stadium in Glendale their home turf and the Footprint Center in downtown Phoenix is home to both the Suns and the Mercury. The Indoor Football League’s Arizona Rattlers play at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale.

Phoenix also has a soccer team with the USL's Phoenix Rising FC, who play at Phoenix Rising FC Stadium in Phoenix.

The Valley hosts multiple major sporting events every year, including college football's Fiesta Bowl and Guaranteed Rate Bowl; the PGA Tour’s highest-attended event, the WM Phoenix Open; NASCAR events each spring and fall, including Championship Weekend in November; and Cactus League Spring Training for 15 Major League Baseball franchises.
