The Arizona Cardinals announced a contract extension for defensive tackle Corey Peters Friday. He is now under contract through the 2020 season.
What do we know about the deal?
The deal is three years, worth $12 million. It can be worth more than $13 million in incentives.
He gets a signing bonus of $2.75 million. Because it is a contract extension done this season, the signing bonus is prorated over four seasons instead of three. He counts an extra $687,500 on the cap this year, but that is better than a prorated $916,667 the next three years.
According to his agent, Peters gets $9 million over the first two years if he plays all 16 games. Subtracting the signing bonus, he will earn $6.25 million in salary and roster bonuses (based on games played) in 2018 and 2019.
That leaves $3 million for 2020 when he is 32 years old. It keeps his cap number under $4 million, which greatly increases the likelihood he gets to play out his deal with the team.
The Cardinals lock up their best player on the defensive line. Peters gets security beyond that 30-year-old mark when many players end up pushed out of the league.
