PHOENIX — Here we go! This isn’t your typical sports show. It’s the pulse of our Valley. We’ll tell you important stories, the ones that matter. From those who inspire, the people who change lives, to the names you grew up loving.
12Sports’ Cameron Cox takes you behind the scenes, on the field and talks to some of the biggest names in Arizona sports. This is your all-access pass.
The offseason MVP award goes to Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride. Every time I get an email about a Cardinals community event or camp, Trey's name is always on the list of players attending.
But it turns out, his kindness stretches out of state and to different fan bases.
10-year-old Forge Martin is a massive football fan, a massive Buffalo Bills fan, who often gets to interview the players. But it was a recent interview with McBride talking about growing up with two moms that caught his eye.
"Papa, we need to get a new jersey soon," Forge told his dad.
The family posted that on social media. McBride saw Forge's reaction and decided to send him a jersey. Like Forge, McBride also has parents of the same sex.
"It's very important to let them know that he's not alone," said McBride.
The jersey came with a message and Forge's reaction went viral.
McBride wrote: "Forge, follow your dreams. The world is yours. I want you to know it's cool to have same-sex parents. I'm here for you. We are in this together, you have a bright future."
"It was inspiring knowing somebody else is out there that does the same thing that I want to do, is good at football. and is in the same situation with me," said Forge. "Except he has two moms and I have two dads"
Forge also got to FaceTime with McBride, or as he calls him, his new big brother. Forge said he's going to change his number to McBride's 85 this coming fall, and McBride told his new friend that he can call him any time.
"It means a lot because he doesn't have a brother," said Papa, Forge's dad. "Me and my husband we're just always worried about when he goes and does things will he be accepted? Will he have to be quiet about his family or can you be proud? To see him so seen and so proud, it just made me feel like no matter what he does, he's going be fine."
The Cardinals open the season in Buffalo and Forge will be there cheering on his new favorite player. But he's bringing his own gift.
"So I'm going to give him my jersey," said Forge. "Yes, I'm going to sign it."
