Police said the 3-year-old girl was on the driveway of a home when Heap moved a truck, hitting her.

MESA, Ariz. - Former Cardinals and ASU tight end Todd Heap's daughter has died after Heap accidentally ran her over in his truck Friday afternoon, Mesa police have confirmed.

The crash happened near Eagle Crest Drive and Las Sendas Mountain Drive in northeast Mesa.

Police said the 3-year-old girl was in the driveway of a home when Heap moved a truck, hitting her.

She was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said Heap showed no signs of impairment. They are still investigating.

Heap played for the Cardinals at the end of his career in 2011 and 2012. Prior to that, he played 10 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, making two Pro Bowls.

Heap is a Mesa native who was an all-Arizona player at Mountain View High School. He starred for ASU from 1998-2000 and was a first-round draft pick of the Ravens in 2001.

The Arizona Cardinals released a statement on the situation Saturday morning.

"Our hearts go out to Todd, Ashley and the Heap family. It is a grief that is beyond words and one which no family should ever experience. Hopefully the prayers, love and support of their incredible group of friends and family provide them comfort that long with their strong faith will lead them through this unspeakably difficult time."

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians also tweeted his condolences Saturday morning.
