Cards clinch playoff berth: Storylines and takeaways

The Arizona Cardinals clinched a playoff berth for the second-straight season on Thursday night.
Dec 10, 2015; Glendale, AZ, USA; Arizona Cardinals defensive end Calais Campbell (93) celebrates after recovering a fumble in the second half against the Minnesota Vikings at University of Phoenix Stadium.

The Arizona Cardinals won a nail biter over the Minnesota Vikings 23-20 Thursday night, thanks to a late Chandler Catanzaro field goal and a Dwight Freeney forced fumble to seal the victory.

Historic season for Palmer

Carson Palmer is 35 years old and a year removed from an ACL injury.

On Thursday night, he broke Kurt Warner's record for touchdown passes in a season.

Palmer threw his 31st TD pass of the season on Thursday night, in a game in which he threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns.

This comes just a five days after Larry Fitzgerald caught his 1,000 career reception against the St. Louis Rams.

It's been a historic season for the Cardinals, and fans hope it ends historically as well.

Playoff bound

The Cardinals improved to 11-2 on Thursday evening, and clinched a playoff berth as well.

Their seeding still isn't decided yet, but a win over the Philadelphia Eagles next week on Sunday Night Football would give the Cards the NFC West crown.

After the game, both head coach Bruce Arians and players downplayed the fact that the team clinched a playoff berth saying there was still a lot of work to be done.

While that's true, there is also something to be said about already being in the playoffs and going into a mini-bye week after playing on Thursday night.

Arizona still have to play the Eagles, Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks to end the year.

Stat of the game

3.

Minnesota had three turnovers Thursday night, and their final fumble proved to be the difference in the game.

Weird game

Carson Palmer said it multiple times after Thursday's win, the game was just weird.

Perhaps the oddities were best summed up in the third quarter when Palmer hit Michael Floyd for a huge touchdown. It was a play where Larry Fitzgerald threw a great lead block to spring Floyd down the sideline.

It was also a play where Fitzy and Floyd were wide open within two yards of each other.

After the game Palmer joked he saw them both open and just threw it in-between them.

Offensive guard Mike Iupati also had a catch resulting in a first down.

I never thought I'd say those words in that order.

Palmer also admitted even though the game was weird, winning those 'weird' games is important to a team.

Arizona has shown their ability to win in just about every fashion this season, now add weird wins to the list.
