GLENDALE, Ariz. — Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Greg Dortch will want to make sure he gets offensive lineman Jonah Williams a gift this Christmas after Williams made sure the Cardinals avoided disaster in the first quarter against the New England Patriots on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
Dortch was running toward the endzone after getting a handoff from quarterback Kyler Murray when Patriots linebacker Anfernee Jennings forced Dortch to fumble.
That's when Williams came to the rescue as he recovered the fumble in the endzone just before it would gone out of bounds, scoring a touchdown for Arizona, which gave the Cardinals a 10-0 lead.
If the ball had gone out of bounds, it would have been a touchback for the Patriots, who would have taken over down just three points.
On the play, Williams became the first Cardinals offensive lineman to score a touchdown since Levi Brown back in 2010, according to ESPN'S Josh Weinfuss.
That was Williams' first NFL touchdown and first overall touchdown since he was in sixth grade, when he played fullback for the Atlanta Colts at Murphey Candler Park in Brookhaven, Georgia, according to Cardinals senior vice president of media relations Mark Dalton.
