Former Sun Devils team up with the Padres

Brett Wallace, a former first-round pick, joins Pat Murphy with the Padres.
Mar 11, 2015; Surprise, AZ, USA; San Diego Padres first baseman Brett Wallace (84) leads off first base in the second inning against the Kansas City Royals during a spring training game at Surprise Stadium.

Former Arizona State baseball standout Brett Wallace has been reunited with his old coach.

Wallace was called up by the San Diego Padres on Friday, joining his former coach Pat Murphy, who was named San Diego's interim manager earlier in the week. Murphy also coached Wallace at ASU.

Wallace is a former first-round pick and was the 2007 Pac-10 Player of the Year. He finished the 2007 season with a batting average of .404 and led the conference in batting average, runs scored, RBI, hits, homers, slugging percentage and total bases.

He says he's very excited to get to play for Murphy again.

"It's awesome. Obviously playing for him earlier in my career, and in my life in college and stuff, he's been very influential."

Murphy is just as happy with this Sun Devil reunion.

"A lot of great memories with Brett, as these guys can tell you Brett Wallace was as good a player in the Pac-10, as good a player around. He was clutch, he's just a great kid."

The Padres now hope Murphy and Wallace can team up and bring the Padres as many wins as they brought the Sun Devils.
