PHOENIX — It has been a great Monday for the Arizona Diamondbacks and their fans. The D-backs agreed to an extension with manager Torey Lovullo and now, ace Zac Gallen has been named a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award.
The award is given out annually to the best pitcher in both the NL and the American League.
Gallen is up for the award along with San Diego's Blake Snell and San Francisco's Logan Webb.
The righty was 17-9 in the 2023 regular season with a 3.47 ERA. He started 34 games and pitched 210 innings. He had 220 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.12. Gallen was named the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2023 All-Star Game in Seattle.
Gallen's 17 wins were a career-high, as were his 210 innings pitched.
In the 2023 playoffs, Gallen was 2-3 with a 4.54 ERA. He had 24 strikeouts in 33 and two-thirds innings pitched.
If Gallen wins the Cy Young Award, would be the third pitcher to do so with the Diamondbacks. Randy Johnson won it four times (1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002) and Brandon Webb won it once (2006).
The 2023 Cy Young Award winners will be announced on November 15 at 4 p.m. on MLB Network.
